Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez has praised the performance of David Luiz in the defensive midfield role in the European champions 4-1 victory over Wigan on Saturday.
Luiz, 25, usually plays as a central defender but the former Liverpool manager believes the Brazilian is ideally suited to shielding the defence, and can help bring the best out of Frank Lampard.
“When Lampard has a defensive midfielder, it is easier for him to go forward. David Luiz can give that balance to the midfield. He understands the role,” Benitez told reporters.
“He (David Luiz) knows that Lampard and Ramires are players who like to go to forward. It is very important when you have a player like Lampard that someone like David Luiz can do the industry. It helps the fullbacks too, since they are more protected.
“The quality of David Luiz in possession is really good. He is a player who can see the game and pass the ball with pace. He, however, still can improve his shot. But it’s going very well.”
