Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney admitted that England had to work very hard to beat Brazil in their 2-1 victory at Wembley on Wednesday night.

Rooney, 27, opened the scoring in the game, his 33rd in 79 games for England, after Arsenal forward Theo Walcott had his shot saved by Julio Cesar. Brazil equalised in the second half but Frank Lampard scored the winner with 30 minutes remaining.

“Brazil are a fantastic team, but we played very well,” the Manchester United star told ESPN.

“We earned the victory but at times we were very close to suffering more goals. But England did a fantastic job to win.”

And Rooney praised Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, who played a big part in both England goals, for his performance in the game which was his first start for his country in over 18 months.

“It’s the player to be monitored over the next 10, 15 years. We are well served.”
