His loan move from São Paulo to Real Madrid was one of the shock transfers of the January window, but Casemiro is hoping that his performances for the club’s B-team Castilla will earn him a first-team shot this year.

Casemiro, 20, was part of the Brazil Under-20 side that won the World Cup in 2011, but had fallen out of the first-team reckoning at São Paulo, with questions being asked about both his fitness and attitude.

Delighted to be joining Real Madrid, the midfielder insisted that he will now work as hard as possible to achieve his aims at the Santiago Bernabéu.

“I am very happy. I am leaving one of the best teams in the world in São Paulo and heading to another, in Real Madrid,” he said.

“I will try to give my best and do a good job. My first objective is to adapt as quickly as possible.

“I want to show my work and help Real Madrid Castilla to achieve their goals. Ultimately, though, I would like to seek an opportunity with the first team. Of course I am thinking about that.”
