Zenit St Petersburg’s Hulk has revealed that Brazil legend Roberto Carlos tried to convince him to move to rivals Anzhi Makhachkala before his eventual move to Russia.

Hulk says that Anzhi’s sporting director had called him whilst he was still at FC Porto but the Seleção star turned down the move in favour of staying in Portugal.

“I had a few conversations with him on the phone and I know his agent as well. Needless to say anything about Carlos, he is a great player and millions of Brazilians consider him their idol.”

“We had a nice talk but I refused to take the challenge. I was not mentally prepared to leave Portugal at that time but the situation changed six months later.

“I held talks with Zenit and became acquainted with the plans of the club, with the infrastructure and agreed. I am still happy to move to St. Petersburg,”

Hulk is one of our 30 nominees for the 2012 Samba Gold Trophy which recognises the best performing Brazilian in Europe this season.
