Vanderlei Luxemburgo has agreed a new contract with Grêmio that will keep the former Real Madrid coach in Porto Alegre for two more years.

Luxemburgo, 60, who joined Grêmio earlier this year, originally signed for the club until 31st December 2012 and had recently been linked with a move back to former club Cruzeiro. However, after numerous meetings and discussions with president-elect Fabio Koff, Luxemburgo ended any speculation by signing the new deal.

Grêmio have been one of the surprise packages of this year’s Brazilian championship and Luxemburgo hopes to build on this success next season. And the coach cites the clubs supporters as one of the reason for this success and why he wanted to stay.

He told reporters: “The relationship with the fans was perhaps my biggest victory and the greatest achievement. I had never experienced this.

“We did not win anything, but we gained support. That was the respect they have shown to the club.

“We turned the crowd with amazing games. They often carried the team. This was a factor in my decision.”
