Brazil legend Pelé has successfully recovered from hip replacment surgery and was discharged from hospital on Friday.

The former Santos star went under the knife at the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo and left the site in a wheelchair.

Pelé will be forced to walk with the aid of a cane or walker for the next few days but is expected to make a full recovery.

The Seleção legend had initially gone to hospital for a routine appointment complaining of pain in the hip region and it was decided by doctors to operate on the bone.

The operation lasted 90 minutes and the upper part of the femur bone was removed entirely to be replaced with a plastic part.
