Grêmio head coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo took to the social networking site Twitter to deny that the club has had any contact with midfielder Alex da Souza, who left Fenerbahçe last week, to try to recruit the player for the Porto Alegre club.

Luxemburgo and Alex worked together at Cruzeiro between 2002 and 2003 and still have a good relationship. However, Luxemburgo stated that he had not talked to the player about the possibility of strengthening the Tricolor midfield.

He wrote: “We have not talked to Alex about his possible arrival Grêmio. It is merely speculation being reported.”

Since having his contract terminated with Fenerbahce, on 1st October, Alex has been linked to a number of Brazilian clubs. Apart from Gremio, it seems that Palmeiras, Cruzeiro and Coritiba would all be interested in taking on the 35-year-old free agent.

Grêmio, who sit 3rd in the Brasileirão, will be in action on Thursday night when they travel away to Sport Recife and a victory would put them on level points with 2nd placed Atlético Mineiro, who were beaten by Internacional 3-0 on Wednesday.
