Fenerbahçe have announced that they have terminated the contract of their former Brazilian international Alex De Souza earlier today.

The Istanbul club released a statement confirming that Alex, 35, had left the club by mutual consent.

The statement read: “Following today’s meeting with Alex De Souza we thanked him for his contributions to club.

“We agreed to mutually terminate his contract with the club.”

This has come off the back of a strange few weeks for the Brazilian who, despite having a statue erected by the clubs fans as a thank you for his services, found himself dropped for the Champions League playoff against Spartak Moscow last month and was substituted at half-time in the 2-0 defeat against Kasimpasa at the weekend after falling out with manage Aykut Kocaman.

The former Cruzeiro playmaker, who joined Fenerbahçe in 2004, took to Twitter to thank the fans this afternoon.

He said: “My contract with Fenerbahçe has come to an end, it was such a saddening moment.

Fenerbahçe have lost a player but won another fan. Thank you all for everything.”
