Afonso Alves will remain in Qatar after signing a one-year deal with Al-Gharafa, following his release from Al-Rayyan this summer.

The 31-year-old moved to Qatari club Al-Sadd for £7 million in 2009, following relegation from the Premier League with Middlesbrough.

Brazilian coach and Al-Rayyan boss, Paulo Autuori, loaned Alves shortly after his move to Qatar, before officially signing the striker for a further two years in 2010.

The Brazilian, who won the 2010 Emir of Qatar Cup with Al-Rayyan, suffered a knee ligament injury later that year, which kept him out of action for eight months.

Alves was released this summer despite scoring 24 goals in 31 appearances last season.

The former Heerenveen player, who scored 47 goals in 39 appearances whilst at the Dutch club, was also in negotiations with UAE side Al Wasl before this recent move.
