According to Reuters, the Minas Gerais state government has revealed that union and construction company representatives on Tuesday signed an agreement at the city’s labour tribunal ending a week-long strike. The strike, which coincided with an inspection by President Dilma Rousseff on Friday, was called because the union said an agreement to end previous action in June was not being respected.

The Governor Magalhães Pinto stadium, more famously known as the Mineirao, is a 72,000-seat venue that once housed over 100,000 fans but is now being modernised into a 65,000-seat stadium. Despite the strike, the stadium, which is in the running to stage the World Cup’s opening game, is said to be on schedule.

Tuesday’s news comes after construction work at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium resumed on Monday after a judge’s ruling overturned a strike. Workers last week said they would continue indefinitely a strike that had already halted work for two weeks. The stoppage was the second to hit Brazil’s showpiece stadium for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in just over a month. The 2,300 workers on the US$541.2 million project were demanding a health plan, improvement to their food service, and enhanced safety controls. However, a judge on Friday ruled that the strike was illegal and workers agreed to return to the site after being guaranteed a new meeting with construction companies.
