Menezes has come in for criticism for his tactics and selection policy in the Copa America so far, with Brazil having disappointingly drawn their opening two games. However, Cesar believes that the current boss has some exceptional qualities.

“No-one discusses his qualities,” said the 31-year-old ‘keeper. “He is exceptional, but he is still receiving some criticism. If we have an excellent game against Ecuador, the praise will reappear. It is like Lionel Messi for Argentina.”

Cesar also responded to Lucio’s claims that the Brazil side needed to be more committed to the cause, saying that all the players were in the same boat and knew what they had to do for the team.

“Lucio is a player who deserves respect. He is the captain and he has the most experience, so what he says about the national team carries some weight. We must know how to play intelligently, because this is not a club side.

“Everyone is in the same boat,” he continued. “The young players who are in this Brazil team playing in the Copa America are here for a reason, and they know how important they are to the squad.”

Brazil take on Ecuador in their final Group B game at 01:45 Thursday morning UK time (21:45 Wednesday night local time). Join us on Sambafoot in the early hours on Thursday for live minute-by-minute updates of the game!
