The 24-year-old was one of four Premier League players called up by Mano Menezes, alongside David Luiz, Lucas Leiva and Sandro, and was pleased that the coach had faith in his ability.

“I’m happy to have the confidence of Mano Menezes and I’m honoured to have the opportunity to represent Brazil in the Copa America,” he told reporters in Brazil. “This is a sign that I’m doing well. We expect to reap the rewards soon.”

Ramires was sent off against the Netherlands in a recent friendly match, but said he was determined to ensure it was an isolated incident, adding: “I know my responsibilities and I will make sure what happened against the Netherlands is not repeated in the competition.

“I think I paid for my excessive desire to help Brazil win and I will try to avoid it,” he continued. “But what happened was unusual in my career. Anyone who follows my work knows I am not and never have been unfair.”
