Despite the impressive Girona team led by Míchel, Savinho, Couto, Herrera, Aleix, and other stars not being able to keep up with the pace in the thrilling race for the league title, the 2023/2024 season is already completely historic for the Girona team.

Thanks to their solid victory against Cádiz last Saturday, the club, which until recently resided in the Spanish football Second Division, achieved a historic qualification for European competitions, securing their spot in the next edition of the UEFA Europa League.

Girona, nine points away from the UEFA Champions League

As stated by football statistician Mr. Chip, this is just the first qualification for continental competitions in Girona’s entire history, and it was thanks to the good performances of rising stars like Savinho and Couto that the Catalan team achieved this historic milestone.

With 32 La Liga matchdays already played, there are still a total of 18 points at stake in the domestic league, and to sweeten Girona’s achievement even more, Míchel’s team still has the chance to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

If they manage to gain nine more points from the remaining 18, Girona would achieve this mathematical qualification for the top European continental tournament. However, if they fail to do so, in the worst-case scenario, they would still have their ticket secured for the Europa League.

European competitions without their Brazilian stalwarts

Unfortunately, not all news is good for Girona, as despite securing this European berth, they will have to face the next season without two of their stalwarts: Brazilians Yan Couto and Savinho.

Initially, both players will leave the club in the summer after the end of their loan spells. Couto, who is under contract with Manchester City, is expected to renew with the English club or leave for free to another team, while Savinho has already agreed to join the team managed by Pep Guardiola.

Zagallo documentary
