The arrival of Lionel Messi produces a revolution in Major League Soccer. Shortly after signing the Argentine, Inter Miami added other former Barcelona players such as Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. Luis Suárez was also mentioned as a possible reinforcement, but it seems that his future will continue at Grêmio.

Jorge Mas, owner of the South Florida team, denied any alleged contact with the Brazilian club by the Uruguayan striker. “Luis Suárez is a Gremio player. (Suárez) He has a contract. We understand the close relationship he has with Lionel (Messi), Busquets and (Jordi) Alba. They played together at Barcelona. Much has been said about the arrival of Luis Suárez at Inter Miami. We have not had direct conversations with Gremio or with Suárez,” he explained to TyC Sports.

However, he left the door open for the future: “I don’t know how he (Suárez) can leave Grêmio. But if he does, we are free to talk to Luis and bring him to Inter Miami, that possibility would be there.”

Grêmio’s firm stance

From Porto Alegre they would have no intention of parting with the player in the short term. The attacker has only been at the club for a few months, to which he has adapted perfectly since his arrival at the beginning of the year: he has scored 13 goals in 30 games across all competitions.

Therefore, Grêmio would have stood firm and would demand that anyone interested in Suárez pay the 70 million euros that appear in his termination clause. Of course, there are no chances that Inter Miami will pay that much money, so this operation seems very difficult.

Either way, it remains to be seen if the MLS team will give up. Although Mas publicly stated that so far there have been no talks, it may be too early to completely rule out a hypothetical meeting between Suárez and Messi. If that is the Uruguayan’s intention, it won’t be so simple for Grêmio to force him to stay.
