Flamengo came back from two goals behind to salvage a point against Union La Calera, on Tuesday night, in the Libertadores.

The Chilean team struck first in the 8th minute from Martinez Arce’s effort and extended through an own goal from Willian Arão before the half hour mark.

However, Gabigol from the penalty spot drew one back before the break, while Willian Arão got retribution for his mistakes and got the equalizer in the second half.

Flamengo started the game on the upper foot, but conceded early on to Martinez’s goal, before going down 2 nil, from an own goal from Willian Arão in the 27th minute, when the Brazilian deflected the ball following a corner.

The hosts defended well without conceding much clear-cut goal scoring chances. However, a little defensive mistake got Flamengo into the game in the 31st minute, as Gabriel Barbosa drew a goal back from the penalty spot, before Willian Arão equalized in the 77th minute to make it all level.

Gabigol hits yet another milestone

Following yet another converted penalty, Gabigol continues to see his stock rise in the Libertadores as he has now moved up to 17 goals, one ahead of Zico and making him the top scorer for Fla in the competition.

With the draw, Flamengo remains first on the log, six points ahead of second place LDU who has a game in hand against third place Vélez. They return to the field on Wednesday next week when they host LDU at Maracanã while Unión La Calera visits Vélez in Argentina. Before that game though, Flamengo would first of all turn their focus to the Carioca Championship final this Saturday as they take on Fluminense, also at Maracanã.
