The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) today confirmed Dorival Júnior as the new coach of the national team and he will be presented at a press conference tomorrow. This makes official the information released on January 7 when it became known that he left São Paulo to join the Seleção.

“Dorival Júnior is the new coach of the Brazilian men’s team,” the entity said in a statement posted on its website. In that brief text he specifies that the press conference will be tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. (Brasília time), but does not indicate the duration of the agreed contract.

Dorival Junior will take over the position held by Fernando Diniz, fired last Friday after assuming it on an interim basis in July and with poor results that left the team in an unprecedented sixth place in the South American Qualifiers after three defeats in a row. The CBF’s plans were to hire Carlo Ancelotti, but the Italian renewed with Real Madrid.

The official announcement of the 61-year-old São Paulo coach was an open secret since São Paulo, which he has directed since April 2023 and will return to the Copa Libertadores this year thanks to triumphing in the Brazilian Cup, announced his departure last Sunday.

Dorival Júnior’s debut at the head of the five-time world champions is initially scheduled for March, in the friendlies that Brazil will play against England and Spain in Europe. The first major competition will be the Copa América, to be held in the United States between June 20 and July 14.
