Real Madrid will face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final on June 1, with the iconic Wembley stadium in London as the venue for the event. The first time the Merengue played against a German team in the decisive match ended in a historic rout, with a Brazilian on the field.

The 1959-60 European Cup final pitted the Spanish capital club against Eintracht Frankfurt. Played in Glasgow (Scotland), it was a 7-3 victory for the team then led by Miguel Muñoz, with four goals from Ferenc Puskás and three from Alfredo Di Stéfano, in a great team that had a Brazilian among the starters.

Darcy Silveira dos Santos, better known as Canário, was the winger in a formation that, as was very common at the time, could have up to five attacking players. Born in Rio de Janeiro and having played for America in that state, an institution that current star Romário now presides over, he spent three seasons at Real Madrid.

After his years with the most successful Champions League team, he moved to Sevilla and then Zaragoza, where he shone. There he was part of Los Magníficos, a very memorable forward line that reached four finals of what is now the Copa del Rey, winning two of them, and lifted the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (predecessor of the Europa League) in the 1963-64 season.

Canário is now the fourth foreign player with the most appearances for Zaragoza. He played 178 matches between 1963 and 1968, surpassed only by the Argentinians Cristian Álvarez and Leonardo Ponzio, and the Uruguayan Gustavo Poyet.

Remembering Zagallo

Sambafoot Series launched a new documentary about the football legend Zagallo. Known as ‘Velho Lobo‘ and as superstitious as it gets, Zagallo helped shape what Brazilian football is nowadays — as a player and as a coach.

Binge the first four episodes available on Sambafoot’s Youtube channel. Stay tuned for upcoming releases as we keep telling this legend’s life story.
