Botafogo’s bad streak seems to have no end. Even with a new coach on the sidelines, Fogao once again wasted an opportunity to return to winning ways: in Tiago Nunes’ debut, they drew 2-2 against Fortaleza in a rescheduled match from Matchday 32 of the 2023 Brasileirao. This result leaves them one point behind Palmeiras, the current leader with 62 points. Meanwhile, Juan Pablo Vojvoda’s side remains in Sudamericana spots, sitting 11th with 44 points.

The evening didn’t start well for the visitors: within just eight minutes, Yago Pikachu found the net after a great pass from Calebe. The Lone Star quickly equalized thanks to an own goal by Emanuel Brítez. In a similar situation to that of the initial goal, Calebe scored made things 2-1 for the hosts at the 41st minute. After 78 minutes, a header from substitute Danilo sealed the draw. A point that may not seem like much for Botafogo, but it could be crucial in the final stretch of the championship.

What’s next for Botafogo

The situation has gone from being entirely favorable to extremely dangerous for the Rio de Janeiro club. Botafogo was once the leader with a 16-point advantage at a certain point in the season, but their results started to decline under Bruno Lage’s tenure. Even after his departure, they are struggling to turn things around.

Their last victory was in October, when they defeated the bottom-placed América Mineiro away. Since then, they’ve had three draws and four defeats. In the midst of this, they lost to direct rivals in the title race such as Palmeiras and Gremio. Fogao will aim to get three points again on Sunday, November 26, when they host Santos. After that, they will face Coritiba, Cruzeiro, and Internacional.

It will definitely be an exciting end to the season for football enthusiasts. However, it’s not the outcome that Botafogo fans would have wished for, as the team seemed to have enough margin to reach this stage more comfortably.
