The 26-year-old’s current contract was due to expire in the summer of 2021 but will now remain with the club until 2022 at least.

Since joining from Gremio in 2014, Wendell has grown to be a key member of the Die Werkself outfit.

His importance to the club was evident going by the words of Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes.

Over the course of his six years at Leverkusen, Wendell has become a key member of our squad,” Rolfes said in a statement to the club’s website.

“As a full-back, he plays a significant role on the pitch and, beyond that, he very much identifies with the team and the whole club,” added Rolfes. Wendell is very important to us as a player and also as a role model.”

Since his debut for Bayer Leverkusen in 2014, the Brazilian has made 212 total appearances for the club.

Wendell continues to be a key figure for Bayer Leverkusen

Peter Bosz’s men have been one of the best performers this season and remain well placed to qualify for the Champions League next season.

With a game in hand, Leverkusen are level on points with fourth-placed Monchengladbach and have been in decent form since the Bundesliga resumed.

Part of Leverkusen’s solidarity has been a formidable backline, which Wendell has featured in regularly this season.

Die Werkself’s 36 goals conceded after 29 games means only the top three sides in Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have conceded less goals this season.

His attacking style of play as a defender makes him an ideal fit in Peter Bosz’s lineup.

The pacy and versatile left-back can also play as a left-winger and that natural attacking intent in him means he fits Leverkusen’s style of play when they go on the counter-attack.

So far this season, Wendell has played 27 total appearances in all competitions for Leverkusen and has made the starting lineup in the Bundesliga 18 times.
