Some of Brazil’s top stars had a mixed time of things in Europe’s top leagues over the weekend.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar helped his side recover from a goal down to win 3-1 at Rennes. The 26-year-old assisted Thomas Meunier to put PSG in front after an Angel Di Maria thunderbolt got the Ligue 1 leaders back on level terms in Sunday’s victory.

Neymar made it a day to remember for one tearful young fan, handing the youngster his shirt when he was substituted in the 91st minute at Roazhon Park.

Elsewhere, Manchester City demonstrated their Premier League title credentials with a 5-0 demolition of Cardiff City.

Ederson had little to do in goal, while Fernandinho was largely untroubled in midfield.

Liverpool moved to the top of the table after a comfortable 3-0 home victory over Southampton. Roberto Firmino returned to the starting XI following his recent eye injury and produced his usual industrious performance.

Chelsea’s 100% record came to an end as they were held 0-0 at West Ham United. David Luiz and Willian failed to make much impact on the game and manager Maurizio Sarri will hope for an improved performance when his side face Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Lucas Moura played a key role as Tottenham Hotspur returned to winning ways at Brighton & Hove Albion. The winger was involved in Erik Lamela’s 76th minute goal and he was a constant threat down Spurs’ right flank.

Fred scored his first goal for Manchester United when he netted the opening strike in their 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.

The midfielder has started four of Manchester United’s six games in the Premier League so far this season and is gradually getting to grips with the English game.

In La Liga, Arthur had a frustrating evening as Barcelona faced Girona at the Nou Camp. The midfielder was booked early in the game and was substituted in the second-half as the home side chased an equaliser. Gerard Pique rescued a point for Barca with a fine header.

Real Madrid moved to the top of La Liga after Marco Asensio’s VAR-awarded strike proved enough to beat Espanyol.

Casemiro was a steadying influence in midfield, helping Madrid maintain their unbeaten league start under new boss Julen Lopetegui.
