It’s been ten years since the departure of Carlos Tévez from Corinthians to Premier League club West Ham, and the newest rumors linking the Argentine with Timão started last week after Boca Juniors failed to qualify for the Libertadores 2017.
But there was a year in which Tévez indeed came close to returning to Corinthians. It was in late 2012 and early 2013, before Corinthians announced the signing of Alexandre Pato. The Brazilian had a verbal agreement with Corinthians during the Club World Cup in December 2012, but the deal was only made official on January 3, 2013. According to the information from Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola, businessman Kia Joorabchian had contacted Andrés Sanchez at the turn of the year to say that Tévez was determined to leave Manchester City and would return to South America The costs would be similar to what was invested in Pato; R$ 40 million for the purchase of the player and around R$ 800,000 wages per month.
It would be necessary, however, that the then Corinthians president Mário Gobbi call off the deal for Pato to have Tévez. The Brazilian club couldn’t support two transfers of this size, and two Corinthians employees connected to Andrés ensure that Gobbi did not take the matter further. A person who worked at Gobbi’s board at the time ensures that Andrés did not take the name of Tévez to the president’s agenda.
Tévez couldn’t leave Manchester City during the same window, but six months later, he was transferred to Juventus. And the deal was cheaper than that of Pato. Timão spent R$ 40 million, against R$ 34 million of Juventus. In two years with the Old Lady, Tévez played 98 games and scored 50 goals, winning the Italian league, the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup. Pato could never establish himself as a starter at Corinthians and scored just 17 goals in 62 matches, before being loaned out to São Paulo.
