Veteran goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has continued his revival with another strong performance for Watford.

The 34 year-old joined the London club on a free transfer in May 2014, after an extended spell at Tottenham Hotspur.

What he could bring to Watford was unclear, given that he had endured a significant spell on the sidelines without regular first-team football, but he quickly established himself as first choice and was a key part of the side that secured promotion for the Championship to the Premier League.

Gomes had built a strong reputation for himself due to an excellent four year spell at PSV, where he won four consecutive Eredivisie titles.

His move to Spurs in June 2008 was seen as a step up in his career and while his time with the club included some excellent individual performances, he was also guilty of making some high profile mistakes.

As they mounted up, he eventually lost his first team place to Brad Friedel and subsequently Hugo Lloris.

His return to the Premier League with Watford was an opportunity to reaffirm his standing, even at 34, and he has so far taken his chance.

The penalty he conceded in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace was the first goal he’s let in at home this season, while earlier in the match he made a fantastic save to keep the scores level.

His handling from cross – a consistent weakness – also seems a less obvious flaw and his experience and largely commanding goalkeeping has made him the perfect base for manager Quique Flores’ side.
