Galatasaray presidential candidate Dursun Özbek will offer midfielder Felipe Melo a new contract to ensure he stays at the club.

The Brazil international – 22 caps – has a deal until June 2016, but has been linked with a move to Flamengo, which is where he started his career.

Özbek is hoping to succeed current Galatasaray President Duygun Yarsuvat, who will step down at the end of the season, following the conclusion of his one year reign.

Speaking to Turkish newspaper Sabah, as reported by website Turkish-Football, Özbek outlined that he would want to retain much of the squad, including Melo, stating: “We must keep the skeleton of the team intact.”

Melo has been a key player for Galatasaray since arriving on loan from Juventus in August 2011. In his first season, he was part of a side that won the Spor Toto Süper Lig and saw his loan agreement extended for another year at the end of the campaign.

He eventually joined Galatasaray outright in August 2013 for a reported fee of €3.75 million and has now won five domestic honours with the club.

This season, his involvement has been hampered by an injury problem, but he was still a regular under manager Cesare Prandelli and has remained so with subsequent replacement Hamza Hamzaoğlu in charge, making 30 appearances in all competitions and scoring twice.
