Paris Saint-Germain defender Maxwell announced his retirement from international football on Tuesday night and he has admitted the 7-1 defeat to Germany was a disaster.

The full back doesn’t believe the six-goal loss in the World Cup was a fair reflection on the gulf in class between the two teams.

The 33-year-old admitted he discussed the defeat with his PSG team mates as well.

Goal.com quoted the left-back after he spoke to France Bleu about his future.

Maxwell said: “The defeat against Germany was a disaster, but the difference between the two teams is not 7-1.

“The first week of vacation in Brazil was very difficult, but then we talked about it in the locker room at PSG.

“We’re professionals; we must move on to other things and be positive for our club.“

Mawell also discussed the ambition of the Parc des Princes club to win the Champions League trophy soon.

He added: “The club is built the team to win the Champions League.

“It is the ambition, but of course football is very difficult. In each of the last two seasons we have been close to the semi-finals and we hope to go further this year.”
