Brazil’s biggest club, Flamengo, have decided to raise their ticket prices for the second half of the 2014 Campeonato Brasileiro.

This Sunday, the Rubro-Negro take on Corinthians, generally considered the country’s second largest club.

On their official website, Flamengo revealed the cheapest ticket for the match would cost R$50. Previously, the cheapest tickets for matches in the Campeonato Brasileiro cost R$40, an increase of 25%.

The move comes after the team managed to fill the Maracanã with close to 60,000 fans last Saturday in a Brasileirão clash against Grêmio. Flamengo lost the match 1-0.

Prior to that defeat, however, the side’s form had been excellent in recent matches. They had won their last five league games in a row, and turned round a 3-0 deficit in the Copa do Brasil against Coritiba to advance to the quarter-finals on penalties.

Looking increasingly likely to be relegated for the first time in their history, since the arrival of veteran coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo the ship has been steadied. There had even been talk of the club looking up the table rather than nervously over their shoulder.

Now, however, it is uncertain how the raised prices will affect attendances. Despite the disappointing result on Saturday a full stadium added significantly to the atmosphere.
