Botafogo goalkeeper Jefferson has insisted that player protests before their weekend game with Flamengo had no bearing on the outcome of the match, which his side eventually lost 1-0.

The Brazil squad member, 31, spoke out against such claims to ESPN Brasil, stating: “We’re fighting for our rights. At no time did it interfere with our results or work.”

“We are training, we are professionals, we are seeking our goals. It is a united team that knows what it wants.”

Botafogo have been plagued by wage deficits in the recent past, with Sambafoot reporting almost a year ago that player payments were lagging behind at the Rio de Janeiro club.

They currently sit in 13th place in the Brasileirao championship table, with 12 points from as many games.
