The unity shown by footballers following the highly offensive banana throwing at Barcelona defender Daniel Alves  yesterday continued with a show of support from club and Brazil teammate Neymar.

The 22 year-old superstar posted a photo on Twitter of him preparing to eat the same fruit with the caption: We are all monkeys.”

An instagram video followed, whereby Brazil striker Neymar added: “It’s a shame that in 2014 this bias exists.”

“As a way of expressing myself and to one day end it once and for all, do what Dani Alves did, take a picture eating a banana and we will use what they have against us in their favour.”

Racism during football matches is particularly prevalent in Brazil and Spain, with even international fixtures becoming subject to monkey chanting and booing of black players. Alves’ picking up of the fruit that was thrown at him has triggered an internet repsonse, with people doing similar acts as a show of unity to all victims of racist behaviour.
