Legendary World Cup winner Carlos Alberto Torres, who scored what is considered to be one of the greatest Finals goals of all time in the 1970 decider against Italy, has played down his country’s chances of adding a sixth global crown to their collection when they host the sport’s biggest tournament this summer.
Alberto, now 69, told Goal that Brazil are one of a number of teams that are in contention: “We have a very good team, but it is too early to start celebrating. We cannot ignore the strength of our opponents.”
“Brazil are one of the favourites, but we have to be patient. We are good, but we are not extraordinary. The Selecao were favourites at the 2010 World Cup as well, but things did not worl out then.”
“There are always the same five or six teams that are favourite to win it: Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Spain and Netherlands. The winner nearly always comes out of these teams.”
Although accurate in his statement, Alberto’s words will fire up those who believe they too can compete, including England, France and Colombia.
