Botafogo have given their fans an anxious wait after they failed to secure their passage into the knock-out phase of the Copa Libertadores after losing 1-0 to Unión Española on match day 5.

A win for Fogão would have seen them progress and considering it was a clash at home in the Maracanã many predicted they would.

However, they went down 1-0 with Gustavo Canales scoring from the penalty spot midway through the second half to ensure the Chileans grabbed a vital win.

The Brazilian side battled in vein to reduce the arrears and before the opener had been pushing for a goal but failed to look threatening.

And that toothlessness in attack could really come back to hurt them now if they were to fail to reach the next phase.

The three points for Los Rojos de Santa Laura now means they have qualified for the knock-out stages and leaves the next spot in Group 2 completely up for grabs.

Botafogo had their future in their own hands and still do, however, they have now made life extremely difficult for themselves.

They are second in the group with seven points ahead of Independiente del Valle and San Lorenzo, both on five, and they face the latter side next week away in Argentina.

Fogão most likely only need a draw to qualify but San Lorenzo will be going all out for a win, which would possibly see them progress so it should prove to be a tough examination of Botafogo next Wednesday.
