Júlio César apparently came close to signing for Portuguese giants Benfica last summer but the transfer failed to come to fruition, despite this the Queens Park Rangers loanee still believes he could move their in the future.

Currently on loan at Toronto FC, César explained in an interview with Portuguese radio Antena 1 how it nearly happened.

Lancenet quoted the keeper, he said: “Benfica is a big club and it would be wonderful to play in a club with so much history.

“It was a pity that it did not work out. We’ll see if in the future we return to talks and can close something. We came to talk but I think it was because of the salary that we couldn’t agree anything.”

As the QPR and Brazil international was speaking on a Portuguese radio station he was inevitably asked about Cristiano Ronaldo.

César went on to discuss Portugal and Brazil’s World Cup groups, concluding: “Portugal deserves much respect and Cristiano Ronaldo is a wonderful player.

“We have a tough group, Portugual too but let’s see how things go.”
