The Estadio Beira-Rio in Porto Alegre is the latest World Cup venue to court controversy after it was revealed that temporary stadium structures have not yet been implemented, with the start of the tournament less than three months away.
The most Southern of Brazil’s venues, the Beira-Rio is to host five games, including a second round match, at this summer’s event. However, unless a vote goes through to enable tax breaks to the companies involved, then major doubts will be cast over the stadium’s participation.
“This is the point which is the crux in terms of holding the World Cup in Porto Alegre,” mayor Jose Fortunati told Radio Gaucha, “If the bill is not voted, we will not have the World Cup in Porto Alegre.”
“This is because we will not have the resources to do it. We have no Plan B, Plan C or Plan Z. The only alternative is this.”
