Argentina’s fulcrum, Lionel Messi, has stressed the importance of the luck needed in order for any team to win the World Cup and highlighted the last tournament in South Africa as a prime example of such an instance happening.

The mercurial Barcelona attacker, upon whom his country’s success will hugely depend this summer, told reporters: “It takes luck to win a World Cup, as Spain had in 2010.”

“Spain, for example, was the best team but also relied on luck because Robben missed two great chances in the final.”

“Xavi and Andres Iniesta (teammates at Barcelona) are good friends and they told me that if I win the World Cup, Argentines will go crazy if we get the title.”

His country haven’t scaled the summit of international football since the halcyon days of Diego Maradona in the 1980s and the upcoming competition is seen as Messi’s best chance yet to lift the trophy. To triumph in Brazil would certainly eradicate the pain of having not won the sport’s most prestigious prize since 1986.
