Brazilian veteran Luisao has declared that he wants to end his career at Portuguese club Benfica and, at the age of 35, it would be foolhardy to imagine him sourcing alternative European football. A return to Brazil at some point could yet materialise for the 44-times capped centre back, who played for Cruzeiro up until 2003.

“When I came to the club I imagined a challenge , but I didn’t expect the best dream I could imagine,” Luisao told reporters, “Benfica gives me a chance to keep a fantastic condition.”

“At 35, it is perhaps a little too early to start thinking about stopping playing- I can still play at a high level.”

“But at the moment I think I’ll end my career at Benfica, that is the project I have for myself and my family.”

In his time at the club, Luisao has won two league titles and six domestic cups, as well as two Confederations Cups with Brazil.
