Often considered Mexico’s best player, the 24-year-old Real Sociedad forward met coach Miguel Herrera and other Mexican officials on Monday before Herrera then confirmed that Vela “did not show the kind of dedication” required to play for the national team.

The Mexican football federation then confirmed the news in a statement saying that “Carlos Vela will not be called up.”

Vela has nine goals in 35 international appearances but has not played for El Tri since February 2011 after a falling out with national team coach Jose Manuel de la Torre. Despite De la Torre’s sacking last September, Vela has maintained his stance and says he is focusing on his club career.
