Whilst Botafogo and Vasco da Gama could only manage draws in the latest round of matches in the Campeonato Carioca, Flamengo maintained winning ways to top the table.

Botafogo’s fans were left disappointed by a goalless draw against Bangu on Tuesday night. The following day, Vasco had to rely on a goal from Edmilson to salvage a point away at Macaé, the game ending in a 1-1 draw.

Flamengo have started the campaign in much more positive fashion, however, winning their first two games and assuming the leadership of the championship. They were made to wait for their latest victory, and needed a fine 85th minute strike from Welinton to give them all three points against a resilient Volta Redonda side.
