Japanese automaker Nissan are set to pull out of a sponsorship deal with Vasco da Gama.

The decision has come as a result of the violent altercations between Gigante da Colina fans and their Atlético Paranaense counterparts.

Both sets of supporters clashed as the two sides played out their final Brasileirão match of the season.

The game was temporarily halted, with many fans wounded, while a helicopter even had to land on the pitch to airlift one man to hospital.

The incidents have proven costly to Vasco, with Nissan withdrawing their funding. They had initially agreed to sponsor the Rio de Janeiro-based club for four years in July.

“These acts of violence are incompatible with the values and principles supported and defended by the company across the world,” said a Nissan statement, as reported by 3news.

After play restarted, Atlético eventually won 5-1, relegating Vasco to the Brasileirão Série B.
