Luiz Felipe Scolari intends to call up Diego Costa for Brazil’s two friendlies next month.
A Seleção face Honduras – provided they aren’t participating in a World Cup play-off match – on November 16 at Miami’s Sun Life Stadium. They will play another friendly in the United States three days later against a so far unnamed opposition.
According to a report in AS, as reported by Football Espana, the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) have officially told the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) that Costa will be selected.
It is yet another twist in an ongoing saga. The 25 year-old’s desire to switch allegiance to Spain is born out of frustrated at not being call up by Brazil.
Costa’s lack of involvement in the Confederations Cup, where he would have played competitively and therefore been unable to swap nationalities, is believed to have pushed him towards Spain.
While FIFA are yet to ratify the switch, the suggestion is that Costa now wants to represent La Furia Roja, who he qualifies for after residing in Spain since the age of 16.
The CBF will be happy to let FIFA decide Costa’s fate, continues AS. Any delay in reaching a conclusive decision may jeopardise his chances of featuring for either Spain or Brazil at the 2014 World Cup. Much will depend on whether he accepts Scolari’s call next month.
