Lucas Leiva has paid tribute to Liverpool teammate and captain Steven Gerrard and says he is the most ‘complete’ player he has ever played with.

Gerrard is set to enjoy his testimonial on Saturday against Olympiakos, the scene of his stunning strike in the infamous 2005 Champions League match.

The Brazilian spoke of his awe at the Reds star and admits he is fortunate to have played alongside him as long as he has.

“When you remember Gerrard, you automatically remember Liverpool. He really is the symbol of the club. For over 15 years representing a club, the only one he played throughout his career and I’m sure will still be the only one.

“This shows a lot, he is a player who has always valued the club too. I’ve never played with a player as complete as him. I have the experience of playing for six years with Gerrard.

“Nowadays players switch clubs often, which is a normal thing in football, but when you find a player who throughout his career remained at the same club, it is really something to appreciate.

“Gerrard is a player who is an example to the people, not only the person but the football he plays, which is awesome. I got probably the best time of it when he was really in the best of shape physically, technically and he’s still the same player.”
