Gheorghe Popescu believes Barcelona’s defence would be unmatched in world football if they bring in Thiago Silva from PSG.
The Seleção captain has been heavily linked with a move to the Camp Nou this summer, even though the player, his agent and the French club indicate he won’t be sold.
The potential signing of Silva is exciting for one of Barca’s more notable former centre-backs and captains and the prospect of linking him up with Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol is quite something, reports Football Italia.
Popescu told La Xarxa: "A trio of centre-backs in Puyol, Pique and Thiago Silva would be awesome.
"If Barca can sign Thiago Silva, they would have the three best centre-backs in the world. But I do not know if they will be able to buy him.
"[Marc] Bartra has the potential too, but to reach the level of Pique and Puyol, he must play. Being on the bench you cannot gain experience. He is a quality player and young.
"For the club it would be very important for the future that they find a player who can play at centre-back and act as a playmaker.
"Now this can be accomplished and [Javier] Mascherano does it very well."
