Atlético Madrid forward Diego Costa has been granted dual-nationality and has become a Spanish citizen.

Due to the Brazilian spending over five years in the Spain, he became eligible for a Spanish passport, which he was granted on Friday morning, reports Football Espana.

It means that the capital club can now sign a non-EU player this summer.

Clubs in La Liga can only have three members of their playing squad from outside of the European Union. Brazilian Joao Miranda, Uruguay’s Jose Maria Gimenez and Diego Costa were those three players.

But now, with the forward being granted citizenship, Diego Simeone can now attempt to fill that extra space during the transfer window.

The striker rejoined Atlético Madrid in 2010 scoring 16 goals in 59 appearances and has won two caps for Brazil.
