Portuguesa have secured promotion to São Paulo’s A-1 league, which is the state league top division.

The Portuguese immigrants team are traditionally regarded as the second team of every São Paulo-based fan, but they have been going through hard times.

They were crushed by Comercial 0-7 last week and were eliminated by Itabaiana in the Brazilian Cup first round.

Portuguesa were thus eager to secure their place in São Paulo’s A-1 division again,as they faced Capivariano at the Carlos Colnaghi stadium.

They dominated most of the game and it did not take long for Diego Viana to open the scoring for Portuguesa. Romão equalized for Capivariano early in the second half, which encouraged the home team to try to win the game.

Capivariano dominated the rest of the game while Portuguesa remained calm and eventually won the game thanks to a goal by Matheus.

Portuguesa have also qualified to the A-2 final, where they will meet either Guaratinguetá or Rio Claro.
