Former Bayern Munich striker Élber insists his former club do not need Borussia Dortmund forward Robert Lewandowski as they already have better alternatives.

The Bundesliga leaders have recently been linked with a move for the Poland international, who has scored 19 league goals in 23 appearances so far this season.

However, Élber, who spent six seasons at the , feels the Bavarians would act wise to stick with their current striking options.

The Brazilian said: “Bayern do not need Lewandowski. He’s not a better player than Mario Gomez and Mario Mandzukic.

“I would stick with those two. Things can go very quick in football, though. You’re indispensable one day and no longer needed the next.”

The 40-year-old then went on to state he expects Mario Gomez, who has mainly been warming the bench this term, to stay put and fight for his place rather than request a transfer.

He added: “I do not think that Mario is considering a transfer. Quite the opposite, I expect him to fight back and return to the starting XI.

“He’s been playing in the Bundesliga for so long, and he knows how these things work. He’ll soon be a starter again if he continues to score.”
