Former Schalke striker Edú was on target twice for new side Liaoning on Saturday afternoon, helping the North-Eastern side to a comfortable 4-2 win away at much fancied Guangzhou R&F.

From early on, it was clear that the away side were in the ascendency and it was the Edú inspired fast counter-attacks that did the most damage to the home side.

Zambian James Chamanga opened the scoring before Nigerian forward Yakubu equalised for the hosts. Edú would give his side a half-time lead, though, calmly slotting home the first of his two goals left-footed.

Jin Taeyan would add a third for his side with a wonderfully controlled lob from the right flank before Edú added a second with a dinked finish over the advancing keeper from Chamanga’s pass.

Former Avai forward Rafael Coelho, one of the few Fuli players to emerge with any credit, pulled back a consolation goal for his side late on to make the score 4-2. Davi also appeared for the hosts.

“I didn’t think that I would be able to score twice in my first game but when the opportunities come I need to take them. I was lucky today, I could take the two scoring opportunities,” Edú told reporters post-match.

“I was very comfortable working with Chamanga and Trifunovic but we haven’t been together long and we still need to improve our understanding.

“I’ve scored twice in the first game but I don’t know how many I’ll score this season. I will try to seize each game and earn more victories for the side.”
