After announcing its judgement on Thursday afternoon, South American football’s governing body Conmebol has revoked its decision to force Corinthians to play behind closed doors following the death of a Bolivian fan.
Instead, the organisers of the Copa Libertadores insist that the club must pay a fine of US$200,000 while their supporters will be banned from attending away fixtures for the next 18 months.
The decision, which had been expected to come out on Wednesday, will allow the São Paulo club to sell tickets for their encounter with Mexican side Tijuana next week.
The incident, in which a flare fired from among Corinthians’ supporters caused the death of a 14-year-old Bolivian fan, caused an outcry across South America. However, the punishment for the Brazilian side has now been lowered following an inquiry into the events.
Since the game, 12 Corinthians fans have been detained in Bolivia regarding the death of the child while a 17-year-old has presented himself to police in São Paulo claiming to have fired the flare.
That version of events, though, is doubted by the Bolivian authorities.
