Palmeiras director José Carlos Brunoro has revealed the São Paulo giants have turned down the chance to sign former Juventus star Alessandro Del Piero after he was offered to the club.

Del Piero, 38, is currently playing in Australia with Sydney FC but has been disappointed by his new club after they failed to deliver on the promise of being competitive in the A-League and is believed to be looking for a new challenge, despite only signing for Sydney in July last year.

However, Brunoro revealed that they were offered the player by an agent but are not in a position financially to meet the Italian’s demands.

He told Lancenet!: “We have been offered lots of good players. We already talked about Del Piero? He was probed but things did not advance because he is a player who needs a marketing job and stuff.

“We had Argentine team’s offering players, Italians (offered). It is difficult to negotiate at this point.

“A businessman called me asking if he had an interest (in Del Piero). I said it would be difficult to look at the time.”
