Cruzeiro have officially announced the signing of attacking-midfielder Diego Souza on a free-transfer, following the player’s return from a six-month spell in Saudi Arabia.

Diego Souza, 27, had been linked with a return to former club Vasco or to Muricy Ramalho’s Santos side, but has ultimately put pen to paper on a three-year deal in Belo Horizonte.

A controversial figure, but supremely talented, Souza returns for a second-spell in the capital of Minas Gerais, having spent a year with Cruzeiro’s rivals Atlético in 2010.

“I am very happy to have signed for Cruzeiro,” the star told Rádio Itatiaia on Friday evening. “Despite other proposals, I chose the club because of their structure and the project they presented to me for next season.”

The deal is now subject only to medical examinations and begins what is expected to be a busy few weeks for A Raposa in the transfer market as they look to transform their squad after a disappointing 2012.
