The 50-year-old told reporters after the match: “We are defining the basis of a team and repeating it each game, it’s pleasing. We caused them problems defensively and had possession of the ball.

“The start of the game was difficult. We had to stay calm and take on a side that had the ball. That was maybe where the victory was earned. We neutralised them and went on to win.”

The Seleção boss praised Kaká’s performance in the win: “It shows he is coming back. More than the two goals, what is important for the coach is his all round play. He was good in this respect.

“Tactically he was very good, he was determined for the Seleção to play with more personality and play with more quality. I’m content with that.”

Brazil will now prepare for the upcoming Superclássico das Américas second leg against Argentina which is scheduled for November 21 after a floodlight failure caused the original match to be abandoned.
