Palmeiras secured a comfortable 3-1 lead over Colombia’s Millionarios in the first leg of the Round of 16 stage in the Copa Sudamericana in São Paulo.

The Brazilians suffered an early setback as forward Maikon Leite was stretchered off with a foot injury but recovered as they took the lead through Obina after good work from Daniel Carvalho.

Palmeiras increased their lead after half time when Tiago Real latched on to a Luan cross to make it 2-0 to the home side.

Millionarios grabbed a goal back in the last ten minutes as the unfortunate Artur turned the ball into his own net to make it 2-1 to the Colombians.

But the two goal lead was quickly restored as Palmeiras forward Luan seized upon a mistake by the Millionarios defence and putting the game to bed in the dying stages.

Palmeiras will take their advantage to Bogota for the second leg which will be played on October 23.

The São Paulo side are currently languishing in the relegation zone at 18th place in the Brasileirão.
