Manchester United reportedly made a £38 million bid for Brazil forward Neymar on transfer deadline day.

According to The Sun, the Red Devils’ record bid failed when the highly-rated 20-year-old said he wanted to remain at his boyhood club Santos until after his country had hosted the 2014 World Cup.

The British newspaper also claims that United turned their attention to Neymar after failing to sign his compatriot Lucas Moura, who subsequently agreed to join Paris Saint-Germain in a deal reportedly worth around £35 million.

Spanish powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid have also both been monitoring Neymar, but Santos are determined to keep hold of their star player.
