Adriano, 30, has struggled with both physical and mental ailments over the past few seasons and has been training with Flamengo to regain his fitness.

The former Inter Milan and Roma striker enjoyed a succesful spell at Flamengo alongside Vagner Love in 2009, in a partnership dubbed the ‘Empire of Love’, but it was a period marked by alcohol-related problems that created unwanted headlines.

Now, though, the Rubro-Negro have offered the striker a second-chance in the hope that he can regain some of his early career form, which once saw him touted as a successor to Ronaldo as Brazil’s first choice No. 9.

“Thanks to God and thanks to my agent Luca, who stayed by my side all this time,” Adriano said on Twitter.

“Thanks to my friends, my family, to the professionals that helped me and also I give immense thanks to the fans of Flamengo who made all the difference.”

Adriano has signed a short-term contract which will keep him at the club until December.
